NCPS can scan your slide and color negative film into 16 megapixel files on a CD for around twenty dollars a roll including postage. This is in addition to all of the usual services offered by a high end commercial lab. If you're shooting a fine grain film such as Fuji Provia 100 and can tolerate a seven to ten day turnaround, 16 MP scans compare well to today's midrange digitals. West Coast Imaging Calypso Color Folio These labs have drum scanners, commercial printers and a good reputation among photographers who sell large prints for big bucks. Check with them if you need the best possible scan from a slide or negative or a best quality exhibition print. West Coast Imaging has a nice tech tips page. A 35 mm transparancy scanned on a drum scanner might take you as high as 35 megapixels. Adorama Pix Mpix These are commercial printing services that can give you inexpensive prints comparable to those that you might get at Costco or Walmart if you're way, way out in the boonies. You can upload JPEGs to their server, give them a credit card number and expect to get your prints back in a few days. If, for whatever reason, you're obliged to have your color negative film processed and scanned to a lo-rez CD at a local minilab, you can always have important negatives re-scanned at higher resolution at a later date. |
